Aloha,
Today was a somewhat adventure filled day. I woke up too early again (before 5) but managed to fall back to sleep until 6. I am getting my sleep schedule fixed...slowly. Anyway, I got up, worked for about an hour on email and internet stuff, then got a shower, and around 8:45 got a taxi for the Prince Lot Hula Festival. Getting the bus there is a bit of a pain in the neck, but it would have been doable. Nevertheless, the taxi was fast, and I got there by 9:05, in time to watch the opening ceremonies. I also bought a couple t-shirts (two for me, two for friends), a program and an admission button. I later got a Hula calendar for free. Anyway, I looked around at the people selling stuff (most had stuff for ladies, so it was just a quick pass by) and the ancient weapon sellers (modern made but based on ancient designs) were way too expensive. I then found a seat and watched Hula until 11:30. I got some lunch (a Hawaiian combo launch of different pork dishes) and then sat and watched more Hula until 12:30.
It started to rain at that point, so I decided to head for a bus stop. The directions on line were pretty good, they just didn't say it was mostly uphill to the bus stop. Then, the bus was running late, so I had to wait a half hour...not in the rain, but now the brilliant sunshine. Luckily I had some suntan lotion and sprayed it on. Then I got on the bus ($30 for the taxi, $2.50 for the bus) with some other Hula goers, then made our slow way back to Waikiki. I had to walk a couple blocks from where the bus dropped me off, but it wasn't that bad. I was back at the hotel by 3 o'clock. 20 minutes by taxi, 75-80 minutes by bus. Oh well.
Anyway, got to see a lot of "scenic" areas especially downtown during the bus ride, and that included a horde of bums waiting for a free meal in a park. It did remind me that I should spend an afternoon in Chinatown at some point...
Last night, I went out with the crowds and got to watch the fireworks at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. I have some really good shots of the fireworks I'll post later on. Not so many from the hula festival because I am using my iPhone which is a good camera, but doesn't really have a zoom. I had a pretty good seat but the camera won't show that for the one or two pictures I did take. The rest of today has been relaxing, letting my poor feet heal up. I have like four blisters and a pile of moleskin on them, so I will take it easy today and tomorrow morning.
Time to get some dinner (it's 6pm when I am posting) and then a quite night in. Watch a movie on HBO, pack in the morning, get a solid breakfast, and then leave the hotel around 11:30 and check in at Lincoln Hall. Do some grocery shopping, get a meal with some of the people already present, and another quite night before classes start on Monday. I am going to miss the A/C in the hotel...and the tradewinds aren't supposed to pick up until Monday or Tuesday. Hopefully it won't be too bad tomorrow evening...
Okay, that's it for now.
