Last night, I went down to Waikiki in search for dinner and for my friend Lisa, a Ganesh statue. I was also feeling a little homesick, so I thought getting out would be a good thing. I took the #4 bus to the end of the route (opposite the zoo) and then began to walk down the main boulevard, in and out of shops. I bought some soft drinks, but didn't find a statue of Ganesh. Lots of cheap Buddhas, lots of tiki trash and tourist tat, but no Ganesh. Nevertheless it was good to get out and about. After a brief stop at the Apple store, where I refused to buy an iPad, I was hungry. I wandered about for another 20 minutes, but not wanting to eat at a sit down restaurant by myself, I decided to get fish tacos from a takeout place with a long long line. Always a good sign of decent food. I then found a place to sit down and eat, enjoying watching people while I munched on the tacos, rice, refried beans and chips. I then decided it was about 8:30, so it was time to get the bus back. I didn't have to wait long (The Bus App for my iPhone is a splendid help) and then got back to campus. I picked up dessert from Yogurtland, and then wandered across campus under a beautiful full moon.
I tried to take some pics with my iPhone camera, but it didn't work out.
This morning was two short lectures, one on 20th century China and the other on 20th century Japan. Neither was exactly what I was expecting, and I am not sure the pedagogical 2nd lecture was as helpful as it could be. Frankly I am not sure I learned a whole lot more about the 20th c in either country than I knew when I started the day. So today's lectures might be the first wash of lectures during the nearly 10 days of the institute. I then went across campus to the bookstore, picking up some index cards for a project, then picked up lunch from the L&L Hawaiian BBQ spot on campus. I picked up the single best value meal so far: less than $10 bucks for a lot of food. See the pictures below.

Try to guess from the pictures below what I had:
| Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center courtyard at night. Like many malls, it was missing stories that had been there in 2010. |
| The top of Waikiki restaurant. Yes it revolves, no I have not been there. |
| Lunch. Beef and short ribs at the top (it looks better below), chicken, rice and macaroni at the bottom. |
| BBQ beef and BBQ short ribs underneath |
| Chicken, rice and macaroni salad. Oh and crappy inedible "salad" |
