Saturday afternoon 8/4

It's been a quiet day. I couldn't sleep last night...didn't get to bed until almost 1am my time, then woke up around 7:30. Was a bit of a slug, trying to get out of bed, but finally got up and went exercising around 9:15, some grocery shopping, then came back and did some reading this morning for class next week. Then I worked a bit on my computer, but about 2:30 I decided I needed some exercise and to get out on a beautiful summer day. I decided to go for a walk in the other direction than I normally go, and the end result was that I ended up at Leonard's Bakery. Leonard's is famous for their malasadas, which are simply Portuguese donuts with either cinnamon or sugar. I got a dozen and the place was packed with people buying stuff...I mean packed. Service was relatively fast, about 15 minutes from getting in line to paying, and I got a box of 1/2 original and 1/2 cinnamon, fresh and warm. I then began my long mile 1.5 walk, uphill, back to the dorm. I ate one only when I got back to the room and it was very good. I'll bring some of the remaining malasadas for the group headed to Pearl Harbor in the morning. I am sure they won't taste as good tomorrow as they do right now...

Anyway, I am back in my dorm room. I am going to get some more work done tonight, eat dinner, watch some tv, and then get up early to exercise and grab a morning paper. Then it is meeting in the lobby at 10:45 am for the Pearl Harbor experience. Other than the art museum, which was really the only other touristy thing I have done besides wander through Waikiki, I am actually looking forward to this day of history. I'll go to the Arizona Memorial, especially to see the new visitor's museum which was being constructed in 2010. I'll definitely go to the Pacific Aviation Museum (it should be free for me) and I might even go on the submarine USS Bowfin (which I haven't done before) and to the battleship USS Missouri. It partly depends on what the rest of the group wants to do.  Be prepared for an onslaught of pictures...

Until then, however, I do have some pictures from my perambulations this afternoon. Enjoy!

The nearly full moon over the mountain and with clouds from last night.

Disappearing behind clouds

The same scene by daylight

Beautiful afternoon. Lincoln Hall is the building on the right

Looking down towards the rest of campus; notice the nearly cloudless sky.

Seeing Diamond Head along my walk.

Another shot of Diamond Head in the distance.

Waikiki from the east end of campus.

Leonard's Bakery (as I am leaving). The parking lot was more full and the line was out the door when I arrived and snakes around on the inside.

The next hillside over from the Manoa one. Notice the development right on the side of the valley wall.

Weather starting to change...though it never did rain. And that street is far steeper than the camera shot makes it look.

Hawaiian artwork on campus.

The prize...and the box is shockingly pink.

The dozen delicious and hot malasadas.
